On September 11, 2023, Dr. Matthew Fox, CVHS principal, had a meeting with SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and WLA (Women’s Liberation Alliance). The clubs came with the idea to add a new dance for the school year.
The clubs came to an agreement with Dr. Fox, deciding that the dance will be held on February 10, 2024. They also agreed to recruit other clubs who are interested in helping out with the dance.
“I think it gives an opportunity to have something different for the students, and a chance to have a group of students to organize a dance other than Student Council,” said Dr. Fox.
The concept of the dance is that the girls ask out the guys. This is called a “Sadie Hawkins Dance,” which many other school districts have already implemented.
Junior Leira Hernandez said, “I love the idea because I feel like it will help girls be more confident and guys won’t feel pressured to ask a girl.” The hope is that the dance will help to boost girls’ self esteem.
“I think it will be interesting seeing girls ask the guys out to the dance,” said Michael Velez (11). Most guys are not used to being asked out by girls, as a common stereotype says that it is the man’s job to ask out a girl.
According to National Today, the origin of the name “Sadie Hawkins” comes from the Li’l Abner comic strip character. Sadie was unable to get a husband, so her father gathered all the single men in their town. He let all the women chase the men, having them marry whomever they caught.
The modern meaning has focused on giving girls choice about who to invite. They get a chance to ask out their crush instead of waiting around to be asked to the dance by a guy.
