“The reality is you cannot restore fairness by lowering testosterone, so therefore you either have to have fairness by excluding transwomen or you must accept a degree of fairness through the inclusion of trans women,” said sport scientists Ross Tucker, along with Joanna Harper, who is transgender.
Fairness is related to many things, such as how males are biologically stronger than women. According to the BBC Sports News Website, “The testosterone levels are higher than women causing men to have denser bones and more mass in their muscles.” This creates an unfair advantage because no matter how much a woman trains, she will only ever be as good as an average male.
This is one of the many reasons why men and women were separated in sports. Taking away this barrier would cause the fairness for women to be ruined, said former Stanford graduate Mariah Burton Nelson.
One negative impact is how trangender women have caused biological women to have fear in the sport that they love. Seeing someone who wasn’t born a woman take their spot on the podium isn’t something easy to see. You can see this in the highschool level and as far as the Olympic level. Which shows that no matter how good the women get in their sport, there may be a transgender there with them. Some women have had to go through sex verifications, just because they look like a man. Many ciswomen (biological women at birth) have had to be checked to see whether they were female or male. This causes a sense of anger because they are going off of how they look like a man. If transgender women didn’t compete in women’s sports there would have been no reason to do this.
If organizations like the International Federalization, Notional Governing Bodies (NGB), and NCAA made the rules stricter we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now. In other words if the organizations made the rules stricter about transgender playing women’s sports, the debate wouldn’t be so strong. The policy for student male trans athletes says. “They may participate on either men’s or women’s teams, unless receiving testosterone ” It doesn’t matter if they don’t have testosterone or not, if they have gone through puberty, they have more testosterone than women.
If transgenders continue in women’s sports, the fairness for women would go down. And the playing field will be unequal for the women, who have trained very hard to get to where they are at.
Many people wonder how transgender women feel. Well, instead of joining the women’s side in sports they could join an organization that is specific to ones who are transgender. Rather than taking a spot in a women’s sports team, joining one specific for trans would be more equal.
If you have had an experience of going against a transgender athlete, you should share with your administration how it made you feel. It’s important to have conversations about how to keep athletics fair for everyone.
