According to CBS News, House Bill 1009 restricts student access from accessing personal electronic devices during the school day. This bill is currently being passed in Georgia and is making its way through the states including Ohio, California, Connecticut, and Washington.
In Pennsylvania, the proposed cell phone bill is called House Bill 1014. It would require schools to restrict cell phone use during the school day. It is still in process, but has strong bipartisan support.
Freshman Carter Davidor stated that he feels like putting cellphones in a cubby should be used instead of having it away for the whole day.
According to senior Chelsea Nwafor, “[the potential law is] really dumb, and if students paid for their cellphones they should get to keep it.” Nwafor also thinks that students should keep their phones in case of a school emergency or a need to contact their parents.
Junior Rafael Massey believes that CVHS administration should have enough trust in upperclassmen and understand that they have self control in using cellphones. Instead of having to put phones away for the whole day, teachers should enforce having to put phones in the cubbies.
“I feel like upperclassmen are more mature in that sense compared to freshmen and sophomores,” Massey said. “So I don’t think it should apply as heavy towards us because we are gonna be moving on to bigger and better things.”
