According to ScienceDirect, missing just 10 days of a single math class lowers the probability of an on-time graduation by 8%. CVHS students take 5 classes every day, so imagine the effects. This year, it seems like student absences seem to have been increasing more and more, which leads to having negative effects on students in many ways.
Counselors, teachers and even students can see the negative effects on themselves after missing school. Being absent can have tolls on their ability to focus and cause them to lose motivation.
Science teacher Mrs. Katherine Watson said that she can see the effects in a student’s focus after being absent, “I notice that they might feel behind, so their attention might not be exactly where it’s supposed to be, where maybe it should be the opposite.” Student absences have a large impact on students’ grades.
Teachers notice the lack of their students’ attention in class, which can cause them to fall behind. This could be because the students don’t see the need to complete the work or never get to fully understand the material.
School counselor Mrs. Jillian Stauffer had said “I could pull up and look at the grades and then I could make a prediction about what I’m going to see below”.
This shows that counselors can predict the student’s absence count just based on grades, which proves that missing can have negative effects on grades. Students may also feel a type of anxiety or added stress from being absent. Most students have a fair amount of work to catch up on.
Olivia Warfel (10) said that “after missing [school], I am sometimes more anxious because I have more work to make up.”
Students who are missing work have added stress and pressure, which can cause them to be overwhelmed with more than just finishing missing assignments, but trying to catch up in other aspects. Overall, student absences can have negative effects on students which they may not realize at first.
