CV Closes Out Season With Promising Victory

By David Peto ‘23

The Buckskins closed out their season Friday on November 13 by taking on the Daniel Boone Blazers. Daniel Boone scored early in the first quarter, aided by three pass interference calls, but CV struck back with a drive consisting of ten consecutive runs, capped off by a 49 yard play-action touchdown pass from sophomore QB Macoy Kneisley to junior wideout JP Plowden.

The second quarter started off with Kneisley throwing a pick, but the defense got the ball back, and Kneisley then connected with senior wideout Zach Fisher on a 20 yard pass to score. Late in the second half senior cornerback Keaghan Sweigart grabbed an interception, dismantling the Blazers’ hopes of a late score. The Bucks headed into the locker room up 14-7, with hopes of finishing off Daniel Boone in the second half.

Sophomore running back Nick Tran set up CV with first and goal after a 65 yard kickoff return, but disappointingly, the Bucks failed to punch it in after 4 straight runs. On the next drive, Kneisley and Fisher connected again on a 27 yard touchdown pass, after being put into great field position from a short punt.

The uneventful fourth quarter featured the Blazers putting together a time-consuming drive but failed to break through CV’s suffocating defense. The Buckskins then ran out the clock, and celebrated the 21-7 victory and 6-2 record by showering Coach Novak with a Gatorade water jug.

Key takeaway:

With CV running the ball on 85% of all snaps, and multiple strong running backs, Daniel Boone was scheming to stop the run game. This opened up an opportunity for play-action passes, and CV used this play multiple times to score.
