Returning students of CVHS are faced with a new component this 2023-2024 school year that was not present last year – a one-minute bell.
Chosen by Dr. Mathew Fox, principal of CVHS, the new bell serves the purpose of letting students know how much time they have left to get to class. As students stroll through the hallways chatting with friends during the precious moments between classes, the one-minute bell is meant to grab their attention and gently nudge them along.
According to senior Tyler Stoltzfus, “Yeah the new bell is great. It’s a nice reminder and a good way to keep track of time so you’re not stressing if you’re gonna make it to class or not.”
The one-minute bell made its debut on August 23, the first day of school, right before the first class began; ultimately proving its worth as students made it to their new classes before the original bell sounded.
Considering the problems last year with students being late to class, this bell will hopefully be part of the solution. But not all students share this opinion. While this new bell can bring much needed help to the CVHS community, it can also cause confusion for some.
Samson Pha (11), and Victor Maina (10) shared their perspectives. “It’s beneficial for other people, but not me.” Samson said. He shares that he doesn’t care if there is even a bell or not. “I don’t really care, because I’m always in class before the bell rings,” he said.
Sophomore Victor Maina shared the same thoughts as Samson, saying, “The one-minute bell is great, but I’ve already gotten it confused with the actual bell that dismisses us.”
Confusion between the two bells can result in consequences with the teacher for “leaving” the classroom, or scaring students who think they are late. As the school year continues, hopefully these confusions will dissipate and leave only the positive benefits of a timely reminder.
