Jesus Revolution is an outstanding, thought-provoking film, which propelled it to a top 5 position in the box office and on Netflix. Both a documentary and drama, Jesus Revolution replays a radical revival that was birthed within the Hippie movement, portraying young people who were searching for happiness and peace in the wrong things.

Unlike many other Christian movies, Jesus Revolution follows two protagonists. Also, instead of patting one side on the back and critiquing another as most Christian movies do, it challenges both sides – acknowledging the dangers of both rigid tradition and progressive fluidity. Greg Laurie (Joel Courtney), Chuck Smith (Kelsey Grammer), and Jonathan Roumie star in the film. Born in 1996 in Monterey CA, Joel Courtney (27) is an American actor known for his role in the 2011 film Super 8, and for his starring role in Netflix’s The Kissing Booth film series. He stars in Jesus Revolution next to Kelsey Grammer who, born in 1955, starred in multiple movies and shows as well as voicing multiple animated characters.

Set in the 60’s and 70’s, the movie follows the events of the “Jesus-freak” movement through the eyes of Chuck Smith who leads Harvest Crusades, a small church where service attendance is dwindling. In efforts to revive the church, Chuck opens the door to the “lost” generation. The open doors symbolize his willingness to let change and new ideas to be let in instead of cast out.

Jesus Revolution is directed by Jon Erwin and Brent McCorkie. Jon Erwin is known for focusing, developing, and producing unique stories of redemption, faith and triumph of the human spirit. His colleague McCorkie is known for his heart-felt and visually compelling story-telling. Both accomplished directors’ strengths mesh together beautifully, creating the story and visuals of this extravagant movie.

Released by Lionsgate on February 4 2023, despite mixed reviews from critics, the film grossed $54.3 million USD over a production budget of $15 million. The film won one award, the Dove award for film of the year.

Jesus Revolution includes many costume designs. The film portrays dull, contemporary clothes worn by the older generation. As for the Hippies and “Jesus Freaks,” they chose to have them dress in more bright happy colors, and different clothes that the older generation would deem unacceptable. The way the actors dress fits the time period the story takes place. Props that are used such as a bike, car, even a camera are very fitting for the time period as they show wear and lack of modern design. The movie was filmed in multiple locations from Mobile Alabama, to Pirates Cove in California, which served as a vital axis for the real-life event.

The film’s music score helps to instill a slew of emotions ranging from happiness and peace to violence. The directors and crew used sounds to give the listener a sense of peace in the beginning of the movie, where “Fly Me to The Moon” by Frank Sinatra was played. Nearing the mid-way of the film, dramatic and suspenseful music was played to help symbolize the troubles and struggle of identity that the characters went through. The soundtrack was filled with songs referring to happiness and peace, as well as tracks that reference darkness and depression. Adding that little push of emotion that had me invested.

Overall, Jesus Revolution was a radical and life-changing film that makes you think about the past and what about your faith you could change. I would recommend this film to anyone who looks to boost their faith, or learn more about the nationally-known revival that took place. All in all, I rate this film an S tier. Its visually appealing scenes, amazing acting and symbolization of internal troubles, takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions as you explore the vast Christian faith.
