There is a new Barbie movie in town. The official live-action Barbie movie is one of the biggest movies in 2023 so far. Time magazine says that it has already grossed $1.3 billion globally. The plot line involves Barbie having a crisis about her identity so she goes on an adventure in the real world to figure out who she actually is. Over 18 Barbies are featured in the movie.
Director Greta Gerwig picked a great cast. The movie stars Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, John Cena and Dua Lipa. This movie came with a soundtrack with artists like Lizzo, Dua Lipa, Ryan Gosling, Billie Eilish, Ice Spice, Nicki Manji, Khalid, Sam Smith and more.
The movie has strong themes of women empowerment, and the Barbie world looks like what I imagined when I was 7 years old. The live-action version is very different from the animated Barbie movies of the past. For example, the problems in the older movies are fairy tales but in the live-action Barbie the problems relate to real life.
Alanah Oliveras (9) said, “The movie was realistic, lots of real old Barbies, pretty funny and such a good movie overall.”
